Degree –
In English grammar, degree is one of the three forms used in the comparison of adjectives and adverb.
एडजेक्टिव के विभिन्न रूपों को तुलना की अवस्थाएं (degree of comparison) कहा जाता है। एडजेक्टिव की तीन अवस्थाएं होती हैं जिन्हें क्रमशः प्रथमावस्था (positive degree ), द्वितीयावस्था (comparative degree ) और तृतीयावस्था (superlative degree ) कहा जाता है। इनका प्रयोग तुलना के लिए किया जाता है ।
Type of Degree –
- Positive degree – ( a smart dog.)
- Comparative degree – (a smarter dog. )
- Superlative degree – ( a smartest dog .)
Ex.1. Good/Better/Best
2. Beautiful/ More beautiful/Most beautiful
Almost all one syllable adjective, along with some two -syllable adjective, add -(er)
To the base to from the comparative, and (est ) to form superlative.
In most adjective of more syllable, the comparative and superlative degree are marked by more and most respectively.
common adjective with irregular comparative and superlative forms include the following :-
- good, better, best
- bad, worse, worst
- many , more, most
- little, less, least
- brave, braver, bravest I
- small, smaller, smallest
- clever,cleverer, cleverest
- beautiful, more beautiful, most beautiful.
Rules
1. Positive degree
Positive degree of an adjective is used to express general quality of a noun.
Positive degree of an adjective is used to show the equality of qualities between two nouns by the phrase ….As…as.
Positive degree of an adjective is used to show the inequality of qualities between two nouns by the phrase.
Not as……..As
Not so ….as
- It is a tall building.
- Apple Is sweet to test.
Positive degree of an adjective is used after the adverb comparatively or relatively
Ex. My son is comparatively weak in English than mathematics
Positive degree of an adjective is used before “enough”
Ex he is smart enough to handle this project
2. Comparative degree
The comparative degree is used to compare the qualities of two person or things. The comparative degree denotes the existence of a higher degree of the quality than the positive. It is used when two things are compared. Ex .
- This building is taller than any other building.
- Apple is sweeter than pear.
Comparative Degree का प्रयोग निम्न प्रकार से किया जाता है ।
1. दो व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं के बीच तुलना करने के लिए (ऐसे वाक्यों में उन दोनों व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं का भी जिक्र होता है )
Examples- Mukesh is taller than Ramesh. English is easier than Spanish.
Gold is costlier than silver.
Iron is harder than stone.
2. कंपेरेटिव डिग्री के द्वारा अपेक्षाकृत अधिक, और ज्यादा, और अधिक का भाव भी व्यक्त होता है
Examples- This is not sufficient. I need more. (यह पर्याप्त नहीं है मुझे और अधिक चाहिए)
3. एक ही वाक्य में दो एडजेक्टिव के comparative degree का यूज़ करके एक अलग ही प्रकार का वाक्य बनाया जाता है।
Examples- The more I read the more I learn.
जितना अधिक मैं पढ़ता हूँ उतना ही अधिक मैं सीखता हूँ।
The higher we go the colder it is.
जैसे जैसे हम ऊपर जाते हैं ठंड बढ़ती जाती है।
3. Superlative degree
The superlative degree denote the existence of the highest degree of the quality. It is used when more than two things are compared. eg.
- Mount Everest is the highest peak in the world.
- This is the tallest building.
- Apple is the sweetest fruit.
The superlative degree is used when more than two noun or things are compared .
- Johnny is kind. ( positive and degree)
- Johnny is kinder than rosy . (comparative degree in )
- Johnny is the kindest of all.( superlative degree)
Positive के अंत में e हो तो r और est जोड़ते हैं – – i.e.
Brave – braver- bravest
Able- abler- ablest
Positive के अंत में y हो और y से पहले consonant हो तो er और est जोड़ने से पहले y को i में बदल देते हैं – –
Happy – happier – happiest
Easy – easier- easiest
Positive एक अक्षर (syllable) का हो और अंत में केवल एक consonant हो, उस consonant से पहले short vowel हो er और est लगाने के पहले consonant को double कर देते हैं – –
Red – redder- reddest
Big – bigger – biggest
दो से अधिक syllables वाले adjectives के positive के साथ more (adverb) तथा most लगाकर comparative और superlative बनाया जाता है – –
Beautiful – more beautiful – most beautiful
Difficult – more difficult – most difficult

इस सूत्र का प्रयोग किन्ही दो व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं के एक समान गुणों या विशेषणों की तुलना करने के लिए किया जाता है । जैसे ..
- 1.राम उतना ही ऊंचा है जितना श्याम।
RAM is as tall as Shyam. - 2. गंगा उतनी ही पवित्र है जितनी यमुना.
The Ganga is as holy as the Yamuna. - 3.यह सवाल इतना सरल है जितना ABC.
This sum is as easy as ABC . - 4. टमाटर खून जितना लाल हैं ।
टमाटर खून जैसा लाल है।
टमाटर ऐसा लाल है जैसे खून ।
टमाटर इतना लाल है जितना खून।
The tomato is as Red as blood .

यहाँ
Adj2= comparative
इस सूत्र का अर्थ है कि Comparative degree के पश्चात than शब्द का प्रयोग किया जाता है। इस सूत्र का प्रयोग भी दो व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं की तुलना के लिए किया जाता है । जैसे
- 1.मोहन सोहन से लंबा है।
Mohan is taller than Sohan . - 2. कोलकाता जयपुर से बड़ा है
Kolkata is larger than Jaipur . - 3. रेलगाड़ी बस से तेज दौड़ती है
A train runs faster than a bus .

यहाँ Adj3 = superlative
इस सूत्र का अर्थ है कि superlative degree के पहले the शब्द का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जैसे
- 1. रूस सबसे बड़ा देश है।
Russia is the largest county. - 2.शेर सबसे खतरनाक जानवर है
Lion is the most dangerous animal. - 3. हिंदी सबसे सरल भाषा है ।
Hindi is the easiest language.
