Idioms and Phrases

दो या दो से अधिक शब्दों का ऐसा समूह या संयोजन जिनका शाब्दिक अर्थ से अलग कोई विशिष्ट अर्थ निकलता हो उन्हें मुहावरेदार वाक्यांश ( idiomatic phrase) या idiom कहते हैं । यह सभी भाषाओं में होते हैं । उनके प्रयोग से भाषा के सौंदर्य में वृद्धि होती है और भाषा प्रभावशाली बन जाती है ।

  • ups and downs=everyday problems (उतार चढ़ाव, ऊंच-नीच )
  • birds of prey=the birds famous for hunting (शिकारी पक्षी)
  • beast of prey=wild animals known for hunting (शिकारी पशु)
  • High time= perfect time(उपयुक्त एवं अनुकूल समय)
  • prime time=time between 8 and 11 P.M (रात्रि 8:00 से 11:00 बजे का समय)
  • young ones=offsprings( संतान)
  • Near and dear=friends and relatives (मित्र एवं सगे संबंधी)
  • man of letters=author(साहित्यकार)
  • Birds of the same feather=the persons having same thoughts, behaviour, interest (एक समान आदत ,व्यवहार ,शौक वाले लोग)
  • burning issue=problems of the society(ज्वलंत मुद्दे)
  • Cry over spilt milk=repent for the missed opportunities (अवसर बीत जाने के बाद च पछताना)
  • tight corners=strange and difficult situations (अजीब सी एवं विकट परिस्थिति)
  • Hit the sack=go to bed (सोना)
  • Piece of cack=(अत्यंत सरल कार्य)

ex– As he was the only son in a big family, he was all in all in his home.

3. At a stone’s throw (short distance)
ex– my friend’s house is at a stone’s throw from mine.

4. Bad blood- Bitter relations
ex- The riots have created bad blood between the two communities in India.

5. Close Shave – A narrow escape
ex- As he was driving recklessly in a crowded Street, he had A Close Shave

6. Eat humble pie-– To apologize
ex- Inspite of his constant bragging he lost the match and had to eat humble pie

7. Flog a dead horse-– To revive interest in old matters
ex- The rivals always flog a dead horse to insult their enemies.

8. Get into hot waters– Get into trouble
ex- He got into hot waters by marrying a girl of another caste.

9. In a tight corner– In difficult situation
ex- After losing in gambling heavily, he is in a tight corner.

10. Off colour– Not in usual form
ex– Once a glamorous actress, she is off colour these days.
